It is a town in the southern Chilean area, for approximately 6,000 years its coasts were inhabited by indigenous canoeists, ancestors of the Kawésqar people.
In 1937 the Chilean air force built an air station to link Puerto Montt and Punta arenas, since then some Kawesgar residents who live permanently around the town have met. the provisions arrive in ferries that go from Puerto Montt to Puerto Natales and ships of the Chilean Navy. Its main economic activities are fishing, the extraction of cholgas and public services.
Currently the town has basic services, education and health. During the 21st century, the Kawesgar population has been disappearing due to emigration, diseases and senderización.
